The history of puppetry in Slovenia

Puppetry has a great deal of significance for Slovenian culture and is an important part of Slovenian cultural heritage. In honour of Slovenia’s great puppet artists and its distinguished puppetry tradition, which dates back over a century, we opened the first puppetry museum in Slovenia at the end of May 2015. It is a multifaceted project that, in addition to exhibiting Slovenian puppets, establishes systematic care in the field of Slovenian puppetry heritage. For visitors, the most interesting part of the project is the permanent exhibition above the Estates Hall of the Ljubljana Castle, where space is devoted to the great puppetry artists and their heroes, and where visitors have an opportunity to learn about the most important milestones of Slovenian puppetry history as well as various puppetry techniques. After viewing the exhibition, visitors will have an opportunity to try their hand at puppetry skills themselves in the Castle Theatre, in which puppet shows based on revised versions of original puppet theatre are staged.

To reach the museum, take the elevator on the castle courtyard to the 1st floor. The museum has two floors, both of which are accessible with the use of a mini-elevator or platform lift. The only inaccessible part is a small gallery next to the dragon puppet, but this does not affect viewing or understanding the exhibition’s content.

Accessible
parking
There is one disabled parking spot right in front of the Ljubljana Castle entrance. The Puppet Museum is located in the castle.
Accessible
entrance
The Puppet Museum is located at the Ljubljana Castle. The castle is accessible via the car or funicular. There is a long and quite steep ramp in front of the entrance. In order to climb it you will need an assistant if you are using manual wheelchair, while for electric wheelchair users that shouldn’t be a problem. The museum is entered by taking the elevator in the courtyard.
Accessible
toilet
Adapted sanitary facilities are located on the castle platform under the Palatium Hall and in the Rock Hall under the Castle Coffee House. You will need to call the security guard to unlock the door to the toilet.
Accessible
café or restaurant
The Castle Café and the restaurant are accessible. The café is accessed via the ramp, while the only accessible part of the restaurant is the summer garden under the arcades. The restaurant and wine shop Strelec are also accessible.
Additional
accessible offer
During the summer the castle hosts various outdoor events which are accessible for people in wheelchairs. They organize many guided tours, the famous Cinema Under the Stars, and numerous exhibitions (not all of which are accessible). Wheelchair users can visit the Puppet Museum, the pentagonal tower, the observation point from the bastion platform and the souvenir shop. Also accessible is the model of the castle, which is located in the middle of the courtyard. The Exhibition of Slovenian History is partly accessible.
Accessible
paths
The paths in the castle are either macadam, wooden or partly paved, but they are easily passable. However, you will need help from the assistant.
