The Mekinje Monastery was erected in 1300 as the first monastery of the Order of St. Claire in the Carniola region. The order stayed there until 1782, when they left the monastery due to the Joseph’s reforms. In 1902 the monastery was bought by another order of nuns, this time the Ursulines. During World War I the monastery served as a hospital for Austro-Hungarian soldiers, and during World War II the Ursulines were expelled. After the war, they were allowed to return to the monastery and carry out their duties, but they were not allowed to use all rooms until 1990, when the monastery became denationalized. Finally, in 2016 the monastery building was renovated and handed over to the municipality of Kamnik.
Today, the monastery is run by the Public Institution Mekinje Monastery that offers tours of the building, affordable accommodation with 60 beds, rents premises and organizes various events and weddings. They offer one disabled single room that is partially accessible.
Accessible parking | There is a large well-kept parking lot in front of the monastery. There are no marked disabled parking spaces. |
Accessible entrance | The monastery can be accessed from two sides: the main entrance leading to the inner courtyard, and the second one with the canopy. Both entrances have a threshold (door frame), but we recommend using the second one (to the right of the main entrance) as the main entrance might require help from the assistant. The room on the ground floor has single bed and is easily accessible. The bed enables the use of room elevator, which the monastery is not equipped with. |
Accessible toilet | Adapted general toilet is located on the ground floor and are equipped with a bidet. Rooms do not have adapted bathrooms, the passages between rooms are narrow (65 cm), so we recommend using the general adapted bathroom located on the corner next to the room. |
Accessible café or restaurant | Meals are served in the dining room, which is accessible. You can also use it for arranged events. |
Additional accessible offer | The Mekinje Monastery rents their halls and rooms for various events, including civil marriage ceremony. |
