Galerija Cukrarna

New place for contemporary art

In September 2021, a former sugar factory (Cukrarna) had been transformed into a new area for modern art, and a place for the process of thought formation, creation and display of modern art projects, both in the field of visual as well as intermedia, performative, auditive, music and other art forms. Named Galerija Cukrarna, its aim to become a new hub of cultural events, with works of art through exhibitions and events being only part of the gallery’s program.

The sugar factory was erected in 1828 as a sugar refinery. After humble beginnings it rapidly developed during the following decades and became the first true factory in the region and the largest sugar refinery in the 19th century monarchy. Its fate was sealed on August 25, 1858, after the fire that marked the end of sugar production in Ljubljana. In the following decades it was partly rebuilt and used by soldiers and factory workers, as well as poor citizens of Ljubljana. The latter were particularly predominant after the Easter earthquake in 1895. Some of the famous people that found their new home there were Dragotin Kette and Josip Murn. Their friends Ivan Cankar and Oton Župančič also briefly lived there. It was these famous inhabitants of Cukrarna who, through their literary works, left extraordinary testimonies about the building and the people living there. Living conditions were far from suitable and did not improve even during the 20th century, leading Cukrarna to be considered a disgrace to Ljubljana in the 1980s.

Today, this is no longer the case, as after a long and thorough renovation the Galerija Cukrarna retained only the shape of roof and outer perimeter with more than 350 windows. The interior, on the other hand, took on a completely new, useful, spacious and well-lit appearance. Due to its central stage stretching to more than 2,500 m2 and several storeys high, it has become the largest gallery. It enables the installation of largest art works, which was previously practically impossible, and can host around a thousand people. It can hold several temporary exhibitions and is credited as the place for events, art work and meetings. As it opened it quickly became one of the most favourite places in town. We believe you’ll be impressed with it and what it has to offer.

Accessible parking We recommend accessing the Cukrarna Gallery with the aid of the elevator next to bus station on Roška cesta Street, which will take you close to the entrance. There is also a parking lot next to Cukrarna on the Poljanski nasip Street which has three disabled parking spots, but this is less convenient as it is further away from the entrance and one floor higher than the ground-floor entrance.
Accessible entrance The main entrance is on the Poljanski nasip Street. The door is heavy, so you might need assistance to open it. Access to all exhibition spaces, conference hall, library, café and supermarket is enabled by using the elevator.
Accessible café or bar There is an accessible café on the right side of the ground floor. The café has two levels with stairs, but the ground floor has all accessible and adapted equipment. The outdoor areas, which is open during the warm months, is also accessible.
Accessible toilet The Cukrarna Gallery has adapted sanitary facilities in the basement. The toilet is equipped with handrails, which is set up too far from the toilet, and a sink with an underpass. It also has a changing table for children.
Additional accessible offer Sitting benches are spread all over the gallery. You can also obtain chairs by arranging with the staff at the entrance.
