Mestni muzej Ljubljana

Small museum with lot of content

The City Museum of Ljubljana is part of The Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana (Muzej in Galerije mesta Ljubljane – MGML). Located in former Auersperg Palace (Turjaška palača) near Križanke, the museum is an important part of medieval and modern cultural heritage in Novi trg square, where you can also find prehistoric and Roman archaeological remains. Counts of Auersperg, one of Carniola’s most prominent noble houses, rebuilt the palace in 1654 by combining their own house with two adjacent buildings. Auerspergs mostly took residence in the palace during winters, whilst spending their summers at the Turjak Castle.

All permanent and temporary exhibitions in the palace are accessible. The basement hosts the first part of a permanent exhibition – an archaeological presentation of the city’s history including some of the most important and interesting on-site remains found on the very site of the museum. One of them is also the Roman road which connected the river bank of Ljubljanica with one of the city gates in today’s Križanke.

On the ground floor the museum sets up temporary exhibitions, mostly billboard exhibitions, either in the inner or outer atrium. The main area for temporary exhibitions in on the 1st floor. Exhibitions there usually start next to the entrance, close to wonderful stone staircase. People with disabilities can start their visit to the museum with rooms closer to the elevator

Exhibitions continue in the 2nd floor as well, where you’ll find the second part of the permanent exhibition with a presentation of modern history of Ljubljana. The museum also organizes temporary exhibitions or interactive content for children in a small room next to the elevator. The museum allows blind and visually-impaired people the use of guide dog, but they are not allowed into the interior. The blind and visually-impaired are occasionally provided with additional content, such as brochures and catalogues in large print or Braille, tactile graphics, models, guidance, etc. All visitors are offered free audio guide rental around the permanent exhibition, which is specially adapted for the blind and visually-impaired.

The museum is putting a lot of effort on accessibility, which is why by prior arrangement it conducts guided tours for various groups of people with disabilities, and completely adapts them to their wishes and abilities.

Accessible
parking
The museum is located in the part of the city that is closed to traffic. You can either park at a large macadam parking or an underground parking garage under the Congress Square (Kongresni trg), which also has disabled parking spaces. If you prefer to use public transport, there is a bus station in the museum’s vicinity. You can also use Kavalir, a free city centre public transport mainly intended for elderly and mobility-impaired.
Accessible
entrance
The entrance is without architectural barriers. People with disabilities enter through glass doors in the atrium, which is unlocked by the museum staff. The ticket office is accessed via a ramp from the changing room, and another ramp and an elevator take you to the central atrium and exhibition floors. Some corridors are narrow, but all rooms are accessible. The elevator is 73 cm in width.
Accessible
toilet
Adapted toilets are located on the second floor close to the elevator. The toilet is equipped with a handrail, the sink does not have an underpass as there is a small cupboard under it.
Accessible
café or restaurant
The museum has a café with summer garden in the outdoor atrium on the museum’s ground floor. The café is fully accessible and without architectural barriers. The only possible obstacle is a heavy sliding door. The basement is covered in original pebble pavement, which makes this part of the café less accessible.
Additional
