The museum in the castle of former Freising bishops

The Škofja Loka Museum is housed in the Škofja Loka Castle, whose imposing exterior dominates the town below. Rich museum collections bear witness to the history and modern times of the surrounding territory, once ruled by the bishops from the Bavarian city of Freising (973 – 1803). The importance of the bishops lies in the preservation of the oldest known written records in the Slovenian language – the Freising manuscripts. First mentioned in the early 13th century, the castle had been rebuilt and renovated several times.

The Museum’s archaeology, history, cultural history, art, ethnology, natural history and sports collections, as well as an open-air museum present the cultural heritage of the Škofja Loka area and also place it in the wider Slovenian and European contexts. The exhibitions are located on the ground floor, first floor and the basement. Due to the castle’s architecture, only the ground floor is accessible along with its exhibitions.

Entrance to the museum is free-of-charge for people with disabilities. In January the museum is open only on weekends. Last entrance is 30 minutes before closing time.
