An Important Cultural Monument with One of the Largest Galleries

The Božidar Jakac Gallery was founded in 1974 as an addition to cultural activities (especially art) taking place in the city of Kostanjevica na Krki. It is one of the largest galleries in Slovenia in terms of exhibition area, exhibition material and art collection. The gallery presents the works of Slovenian expressionists at permanent exhibitions, while attempting to present top domestic and foreign artists.

The gallery is located in a former Cistercian monastery that at a certain point in time housed 86 monks and laymen. Originally designed in early Gothic style, the monastery was renovated and extended during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The Baroque scenery and defensive towers with paintings by Fran Jelovšek had been built in the first half of the 18th century. When finished, it had one of the biggest arcade courtyards in Europe.

The former monastery was declared a cultural monument in 1989. As such, it was included into monuments of special importance for the country. The surrounding area and former monastery premises provide ideal conditions for the organization of cultural events: concerts, theatrical and opera performances. The Božidar Jakac Gallery moved into the premises in 1974.

The rooms on the ground floor that are generally accessible to the physically challenged include: Janez Boljka’s permanent sculpture collection including 92 sculptures, paintings and graphics, and a former monastery Church of Mary’s Annunciation with a beautiful and nicely-preserved Gothic interior, and several temporary exhibitions and the central courtyard. Nevertheless, friendly staff can help carry people in manual wheelchairs to upper floor, which is generally inaccessible due to stairs.

Accessible parking There is a parking lot in front of the gallery and one marked disabled parking space.
Accessible entrance The entrance, ground floor rooms and the church are accessible.
Accessible toilet Sanitary facilities in the gallery are adapted. They are located on the right wing of the gallery, right next to the museum shop.
Additional accessible offer Upon prior arrangement, the gallery offers guided tours of their exhibitions and architectural heritage of the former monastery.
