The Ljubljana Castle is definitely one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ljubljana and Slovenia. In 2019 it was officially visited by 1.3 million tourists, but the number is certainly much larger, as there are many areas in the castle that are free-of-charge.
Built in 2006, the funicular connects the Krek Square to the Castle. It is accessible and free-of-charge for wheelchair users. After arriving to the castle with the funicular, take the elevator to the upper floor and you will arrive at the accessible main courtyard. Wheelchair users can visit the pentagonal tower, the Puppet Museum (take the elevator from the courtyard to the first floor), and to some extent the Exhibition of Slovenian History. With the help of the assistant, you can also visit the viewing platform from the bastion, which provides a good view of the old city centre of Ljubljana.
Accessible parking | There is a disabled parking spot right next to the entrance to the castle. |
Accessible entrance | You can visit the castle either by car or funicular. There is a long and steep ramp at the entrance. If you are using a manual wheelchair, you will need help from the assistant to climb up the castle courtyard. There are several paths that lead from the courtyard to various exhibition halls and other facilities. The ramps are nicely sloped, and some areas are accessed with the use of the elevator. |
Accessible toilet | Adapted toilets are located on the castle platform under the Palatium Hall and in the Rock Hall under the Castle Coffee House. You will need to call the security guard to unlock the door to the toilet. |
Accessible café or restaurant | The Castle Café and the restaurant are accessible. The café is accessed via the ramp, while the only accessible part of the restaurant is the summer garden under the arcades. The restaurant and wine shop Strelec are also accessible. |
Additional accessible offer | During the summer the castle hosts various outdoor events which are accessible for people in wheelchairs. They organize many guided tours, the famous Cinema Under the Stars, and numerous exhibitions (not all of which are accessible). Wheelchair users can visit the Puppet Museum, the pentagonal tower, the observation point from the bastion platform and the souvenir shop. Also accessible is the model of the castle, which is located in the middle of the courtyard. The Exhibition of Slovenian History is partly accessible. |
Accessible paths | The paths in the castle are either macadam, wooden or partly paved, but they are easily passable. However, you will need help from the assistant. |
